Consumer Healthcare Experience State Survey

A survey of more than 1,400 North Carolina adults, conducted from July 8 to July 23, 2026, found that:

  • Over two in three respondents (70%) experienced at least one health care affordability burden in the past year;
  • Over two in three respondents (68%) delayed or went without health care due to cost in the last twelve months;
  • Four in five respondents (80%) reported being worried about affording health care in the future;
  • Higher rates of going without care, medical debt and related financial strain were reported by respondents with lower incomes and those with disabilities or disabled household members; and
  • Across party lines, respondents express strong support for policy-based solutions to address high health care costs.

Altarum’s Consumer Healthcare Experience State Survey (CHESS) is designed to elicit respondents’ unbiased views on a wide range of health system issues, including confidence using the health system, financial burden and views on fixes that might be needed.
