New Colorado laws impacting coverage and access take effect Jan. 1

A package of new Colorado laws that take effect January 1, 2026 includes several measures expanding health care coverage and access for residents, reports STL News. Under the changes, Colorado Medicaid and state health plans will begin covering abortion care and related reproductive health services. New insurance coverage adjustments also go into effect, clarifying and expanding benefits tied to pregnancy-related care and reproductive health while requiring insurers to update plan documents and compliance systems. In addition to reproductive coverage, separate state mandates set new standards for mental and behavioral health parity and prior authorization reform, requiring insurers to align coverage and review practices with recognized criteria and streamline approval processes to improve patient access to medically necessary care.
