Maine’s Uncompensated Care Burden Remains High

Maine hospitals continue to struggle with uncompensated care even as new laws expand eligibility for charity care, reports The Maine Monitor. Recently enacted laws, which will take effect next July, increase the income threshold for free care from 150% to 200% of the federal poverty level and caps payments for households earning up to 400% of poverty at 4% of income. It also simplifies applications and requires hospitals to proactively notify eligible patients. These changes are occurring as federal Medicaid cuts are expected to push thousands of Mainers off public insurance over the next few years, leading hospital leaders to caution that the financial strain threatens long-term affordability and access.
