Montana Restricts Prior Authorization

Montana has passed legislation that restricts, but does not prohibit, prior authorization, reports the Independent Record. The reform package targets medications and treatments that patients rely on for their basic quality of life, especially for people with chronic conditions. Moving forward, patients cannot be denied a drug when they are waiting for approval from a new insurer. The new laws also require insurance companies to consult physicians who specialize in a given condition before denying a prior authorization request and guarantee generic prescription drugs, asthma medications, and insulin are accessible without pre-approval. The measures go into effect from late 2025 into early 2026.
