Research Gaps - We Want to Hear from You!

The goal of the Hub's research gaps report is to launch a conversation critical to addressing the healthcare value problem: recognizing, categorizing and prioritizing evidence gaps that need to be filled.

Below a list of 20 research gaps identified during this project. But we need to hear from a wide variety of stakeholders! Please vote on the importance of the gaps listed below. Which gaps are preventing us from having a healthcare system that produces better value for consumers? 

 

Gap No. 1 - Developing a national consensus on what our healthcare value goal looks like.

Gap No. 2 - Better understanding of cost drivers.

Gap No. 3 - Better understanding of what causes providers to provide low-value care.

Gap No. 4 - Comparative effectiveness research to identify low-value care.

Gap No. 5 - Comparative effectiveness research to identify high-value care. 

Gap No. 6 - Comparative effectiveness research targeting our most expensive treatment areas.

Gap No. 7 - Better access to large claims datasets, augmented by other data from EHRs and similar.

Gap No. 8 - Better access to registry data.

Gap No. 9 - Better access to all forms of data to enable identification of medical harm.

Gap No. 10 - Better measures of quality that consumers will use and respond to.

Gap No. 11 - Better measures of quality that physicians will use and respond to.

Gap No. 12 - Better understanding of impact of medical training on provider treatment patterns.

Gap No. 13 - Better understanding on use of financial incentives to alter provider treatment patterns.

Gap No. 14 - Better understanding on use of non-financial incentives to alter provider treatment patterns.

Gap No. 15 - Tested communications to help consumers identify high value care.

Gap No. 16 - Better ways to integrate the community and clincal roles in the provision of health.

Gap No. 17 - New strategies that help finance interventions now that provide health savings or benefits in the future.

Gap No. 18 - Focus on needs of vulnerable populations.

Gap No. 19 - Focus on women's reproductive health and newborn health.

Gap No. 20 - Improved policies to combat high prices resulting from market power (provider, hospital, drug, etc.).
